| Robert McIntyre | Spent 1960 - 1962 at Prestwick High, experiencing the first round of 'O' grades in Scotland, before going on to Irvine Royal Academy for a year. Any old pals out there? | |
| Ken Geddes | Hi, I've been living and working away from Prestwick for most of my adult life and when I return to the town to visit relatives, I hardly seem to know a sole these days, apart from the odd few characters, no names :^)) My school education started in 1959 at Heathfield Primary, then on to Prestwick High and finally Ayr Academy. I then went on to Paisley to do a degree. After much roaming around, I seem to have finally settled down in Wiltshire. I still manage to get back with the family to Prestwick a couple of times each year. I would be very interested to hear from any old friends, male or female, where ever or who ever you are. Kind Regards, Ken. Kind Regards, Ken. | |
| Alan Walker | I started at Prestwick High in 66 and moved to Ayr Academy in 71 for two years. Having completed my education in Scotland I moved south to Sussex and have been here ever since. I am a member of the South East of England Ayr United Supporters Club, which is a group of ex-pat Ayr supporters who meet for beer, chat and travel up to games throughout the season. The future is bright..the future is black and white. | |
| Margaret Mitchell Maiden Name - Easdale | In first year at Prestwick High 1960-1961. Did BscHons in Pure Chemistry at Strathclyde and taught at Prestwick Academy for a few years.Have been living in USA since 1982, in England for 2 years before that. Married to Jim Mitchell with 3 children, James,24, a computer scientist in Minneapolis, Lisa,21, an acting student in Phoenix and Alistair 13. We travel a lot and get back to Scotland most years. If you're ever in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, look me up! | |
| Christine Jakovic Maiden Name - Telfer | Should anyone from Prestwick High see my name here and remember me, feel free to contact me, as I'd love to hear from you.I've lived in Australia for 35 years now. I'm especially looking for Mary Fulton (maiden name). Should anyone know of Mary's whereabouts please email me. Looking forward to hearing from someone (anyone )male or female, I don't mind! Christine Telfer. | |
| Alan Hogg; | It may have been a different Mr Kennedy but I remember my English Teacher in secondary was a "Auld Bob" Kennedy who had a habit of standing on your feet and giving you a "whambababoogy", i.e. trapping your cheeks between two fingers and "massaging" them. Bloody sore it was too. He also had a habit off taking his pointer off the side of your head.(In a Billy Connelly fashion). I also remember a music teacher, Stewart Linton who was a Badminton player and competed with "nobby Clark" the metalwork teacher in being the hardest belter in the School. I also remember a Mr Phillip, a Chemistry teacher, who belted the living daylights out of me, but who was responsible for me moving from the "stupid but saveable" 3C into 3O which resulted in me getting "O" levels and moving to Ayr Academy in 1970. This was I think the last year, I think that moved. | |
| Karel Munro Maiden Name :- Gray |
I went to Prestwick Public to Prestwick High and have only moved as as far as Alloway. Batman and Robin (Linton and Godfrey - music), Baby Blue eyes Kennedy (science), Old Bob Kennedy who gave out Ancient Mariner or Tam O'Shanter to write out as a punishment (in my case Gray's Elegy - once once!) J D Pollock who sneaked off to his wee room for a smoke, Joe Beak (Murdoch - headmaster) Jeannie McGregor even though her name was Margery (strict disciplinarian but best history teacher), Mrs Lee and Charlie Summers (art), Harry Scott (still cycling around Prestwick), to name but a few of the staff. Happy memories, but usually not from the academic side.
| Kenneth Gordon | ||
| Lesley B Donovan Maiden Name :- Devan | Hello, My twin Suzanne and I went to Prestwick High until 1971. Suzanne is now in the States and I am in Ireland. I don't recognise too many names, but certainly Brian McWhinie brings back lots of memories! - Can that really be the same Libby McCulloch? | |
| Suzanne Lamb Maiden Name :- Devan | Went to Prestwick High/Academy (along with twin sister, Lesley) from about 1964 to 1971. Married an Ayr Academy boy (Howard Lamb) '75 and now have four daughters, 23, 21, 18 and 12. Lived in America (Massachusetts) for almost fifteen years. Often think (mostly fondly) about my schooldays at Prestwick. Delighted to see this site, since I've absolutely NO MEMORABILIA from my school days. I'm hoping that as more and more people find this site, they may choose to share some of their old pics/school magazines, etc. (No pressure, now!). Classmates, Fiona McLean, Elaine Joyner, Sandra Easdale, Jane Blair, Elizabeth Sim... Where are you all and how are you doing? No one believes my claim that Norman Conquest taught me Chemistry in high school!!! Mr. Hasty (French) was a pretty nasty belter too, if anyone remembers? (Not that I speak from personal experience, you understand!) Mr.Lintons dramatic "run & thrash" combo was exaggerated by his huge stature (or could it just be that I was very much smaller then?) whereas Mr.Hastys more subtle "curl back 'n' flick" technique was no less deadly. Remember all who failed to find their work from the previous week in Mrs. Ingram's class were not allowed into the classroom until they had? HOURS could be spent in that darkened cupboard next-door, feverishly looking for your work? Ah, good times, good times!! Thank goodness for Mr. Godfrey, whose music classes provided some much needed relief and enjoyment !!! | |
| Fiona Putnam Maiden name :- Baird | ||
| Lesley Taylor Maiden name :- Blair | Would like to hear from other pupils who attended these years. | |
| Alisdair Gurney | Ah, those were the days. There was only one other person who was a pupil at the High School/Academy as long as I was (Bobby, give us a shout if you're around) - Started in P1 in 1960, and was in the last primary class at the High school. Ended up being in the first 5th and 6th year at the academy because I repeated 3rd year (I couldn't be bothered doing homework - there's a lesson to be learned there somewhere). Graduated from Gray's school of art, became an art teacher, then a computing teacher, moved to Ferranti, and am now working as an author for a large US telecoms company in West Lothian. Alisdair has scanned some of his old school photographs onto the web. These can be found at http://prestwick.agurney.com/ | |
| Jasper C R Brown | In 1964 I moved to Prestwick High School from Monkton Primary. Six years passed before I entered the 'real' world from there. Some of
the teachers names I can remember,others I can't ; Mr. Murdoch - Headmaster Mr. Pollock - English teacher (I think) Mr. Mc Laughlan - Geography teacher, in the 'wooden hut' Mr. 'Nobby' Clark - metalwork teacher....a mean belter was he... Mr. 'Bob'Kennedy -English teacher...used to hit one on the legs and back with a golf club with the head removed...I'm sure I still have bruises. I also remember the "whambaboogy" on the cheeks (as mentioned by ALAN HOGG). Mr. Godfrey - music teacher, as was a Mr. Linton ( I think) Mr. D. Caskie - minister from the church adjacent to Orangefield History teacher - pass. I must have dozed-off during those lessons. When I left "Prestwick H.S." in December 1969, I joined the "Royal Corps of Signals", but that lasted only three years. The last 29 years have been with ATC for NATS,and I worked at Prestwick Airport,London (Heathrow) Airport,Glasgow airport,and I have been at the ScOACC at Atlantic House in Prestwick since 1990. Isn't it strange that after forty year's, I am now working a few hundred yards from my old classrooms....spooky or what ? I always wanted to find out what happened to my old pal Ian McCorquodale. He joined British Airports Authority and moved to Edinburgh Airport. Is he still about ? My very best wishes to anyone out there that remembers the 60's at Prestwick High. PS - I lived in Adamton Estate near Monkton throughout the 60's. Does anyone know of any ex-Adamton residents?.......
| Graham Gibson | Prestwick High in 1968. Moved to live in Kalgoorlie-Boulder , Western Australia. Love to hear from old school mates. Please send me an email. | |
| Peter Barbour | There were three brick huts two double classrooms and one single 1st double was for Needlework and Technical Drawing. Single was Cookery. Double behind that was Metalwork and a science lab. Behind that again they built two double classroom wooden huts. The first was Geography and science and behind that were two classrooms used by primary classes. The wing of the school school not visible in photograph housed primary classes and later geography and music. The school took pupils up to 4th Year and then went on to 5th year at Ayr Academy. My year were the last to leave in 4th year. We held a reunion in the St Nicholas Hotel a few years ago along with some from our year/years at Ayr Academy. Plenty of good memories! | |
| Heather Henderson Maiden name :- Morrison | Started in P1 in 1959 - Miss Wallace - only remember what seemed like hours of having to sit with our hands on our heads! Left in 1970 for 2 years at Ayr Academy before a degree in Italian at Edinburgh. Now work in Dundee University (I know, Dundee!). My parents still live in Prestwick but I never see anybody I recognise. | |
| Lorna Ainsworth Maiden Name - Macaulay | Started primary 1 with the infamous Miss Wallace, she would be locked up nowadays with her brand of torture/teaching. Carried on to take highers, remember Mrs Macgregor for history,Mrs Lees for art, my Mum taught there too(oh. the embarrassment). Getting the belt for smoking with Lynn Hunter and on that occassion it wasn't even us. Still keep in touch with a few ex pupils but have not lived in Prestwick for many years. Now on the East side of Scotland near Perth. Both my brothers went to Prestwick High as it was then Allan lives in Aberdeen and Ralph in Ayr.Thanks to Alisdair Gurney for some great photos from Primary that I don't remember ever seeing before. Great idea this site well done. | |
| William (Dill) Morrison | Nice site. Much expanded since I last visited.
Amazingly you and I shared some teachers. I started in 1964 just as Miss Wallace was turning 175yrs old. She would have done time in today's classrooms for the abuse she inflicked on 5year old kids! I was in the last primary class to continue straight through to 1st year secondary. The class after us went to Kingcase as Prestwick became dedicated to secondary education. Our class was also the last to sit the 11+ exam that was used as the basis for streaming in the secondary school. I chose latin and as a consequence "enjoyed" many a class with Hardy Ross. The more additions to the school (that included a new gym and assembley hall) came in the 70's although the year escapes me now. I would imagine that you would remember the Rev Donald Caskie's awful habit of jingling his keys in his pocket while reciting the prayer of Erasmus at assemblies! I live in Canada now as you can tell from the email, but would enjoy connecting with old classmates who would have finished 5th year in 1976. In particular, anyone from the rugby team, or the cast of our amazing production of the Gondoliers (1975?). If you want some history of the school before your time, you should chat with my Dad - Tommy Morrison. Best bet is to ask for him at the Howie Bowling Club, now that the season is started. Aside from the school, he is a great resource on Prestwick information (he and my grandfather before him ran the hairdressers on Main street across from what used to be Gardiners the bakers. He is just starting to learn about computers so perhaps you can peak his interest in contributing to or starting a web page! Regards Dill

Some names from my year - Tracey Graham, Gail Henderson; Sandra Haswell; Does anyone remember Mr Pascall the Accounts Teacher? Love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
| Thomas Hawthorn | I was in the time of Mr Murdoch, not a bad sort. I really liked this school as it seemed to be a personal kind of teaching. Ayr Academy by contrast was awefull. I lived in Winnipeg, Canada, for a few years 8 years ago. You will call it winterpeg which is correct. terrible place and hard to describe the cold to folks here. I like your site, thanks for taking the time. All the Scots I knew in Canada were more Scottish than the Scots here. The best sausage roll was in Winnipeg on the Scottish Day celebrations. I had to chuck half of it away... really!! Cheers. Tom | |
| Christine Hyder Maiden Name :- Mack | So pleased to have found this site. I was prompted by a wonderful evening 2 weeks ago when I was home and heard Prestwick Academy Big Band play in Trinity Church in Ayr.They are wonderful.I went to Prestwick Academy from Monkton Primary in 1966 and left for Ayr Academy in 1970, then went on to Edinburgh to study what was Chiropody then and is now Podiatry. Married Ted a Canadian and moved here in 1989. I remember many names but cant put a face to them. Does anyone remember Iolanthe at Prestwick Town hall Ian Welsh was Lord Chancellor and was marvellous. I remember all the fun behind the scenes -the make up and costumes, and the hall of course was full- all the mums and dads likely. Stuart Linton and Mr Godfrey with his great tenor voice and piano playing. I especially remember Mr Pollock- English - and having to learn such poems as Omar Khayyam with its 75 verses! and how he used to thump the floor with the window pole Happy Days. | |
| Stephen Foster | While at Prestwick I was universally known as "Gomez." My best buddy Ian Purdon and I planted a "bomb" under the presentation desk at the graduation. It was handled with much, MUCH more wit that it would be today -- the headmaster even gave us our bomb back! John Pollock, the english teacher, was and still is the greatest man I ever met. Now living in the US | |
